African Sickle Cell News & World Report is a specialised magazine for creating awareness on sickle cell disorder.
According to him, “as a patient of sickle cell (SS), my doctor told me I may not survive my 20th birthday but this year I clocked 51 and still living due to my knowledge of the disease.”
He explained that sickle cell is a genetic condition, which dates back to millions of years, noting that preventing the disorder has proven impossible.
Olajide said “the next step was to look at another level of managing the disorder, which is to detect the disorder early and prevent complications.
“Nigeria is a country with the highest number of sufferers in the whole world. Statistic shows that 40 million Nigerians have sickle cell.”
He stated that there is need to create awareness about sickle cell anaemia, saying that most people get to know their status after child bearing, “as a person one must know he/she genotype at an early age”.
“The process of treating SCD is rigorous and technical, it require uninterrupted electricity supply, expensive drugs and a willing blood donor,” he explained.
